AUSTRALIA DAY in Sydney
“Australians all let us rejoice, for we are young and free…” Australians love a good party and what better way to celebrate than on our official national day!
In 1787 11 ships were sent by the British Admiralty from England to Australia to establish a penal colony at Botany Bay. By the afternoon of 26 January 1788, all the fleet was at anchor in or near Sydney Cove, and before sunset the British Flag was raised!
Today Australians celebrate this day with nationwide festivals, including parades, competitions and music celebrations. Sydney hosts a variety of special ceremonies, cultural events and entertainment activities with many museums, galleries and hosting themed ‘Sample Sydney’ exhibitions for free (or a reduced price).
Favourite events include the “Big Telly” in Hyde Park screening iconic Australian shows and media such as our beloved fury mascot Skippy (the bush kangaroo!).
Alternatively, grab some backpacker mates from your Sydney Hostel, sunscreen and a very cold slab of Aussie beer (remember Four X and Fosters are decidedly unfashionable in sophisticated Sydney) and head down to the harbour-front (just minutes away from the Jolly Swagman Hostel Sydney) to spend the afternoon watching the air force flyover and tall ships race.
